The Grand Pavilion, Matlock Bath houses the Peak District Lead Mining Museum on its ground floor. It is an Edwardian building that was built in 1910 and commissioned by Matlock Bath and Scarthin Urban District Council as a multi-use building with a theatre on the first floor. The first floor had a ballroom, pump room, council offices and smaller function rooms. It was built to entertain the tourists, who arrived on excursion trains from all over the country. In the early 2000’s the first floor was used as a nightclub.
In 2010 the Save the Pavilion Group was created when the Derbyshire Dales District Council looked for ways to dispose the building from their ownership when the cost of restoring the building seemed too high. The Save the Pavilion Group were granted lease of the building in 2012 and changed their name to Grand Pavilion Ltd with the goal of restoring the building to its arts and community use.
Over the years both workers and visitors have given many reports of hauntings at the Grand Pavilion. Footsteps, disembodied laughter, heavy breathing and whistling along with many other strange sounds have been reported. Light anomalies and orbs and strange shadows have been seen and cold spots felt.
